Fishing for Snook in the shallow waters of Southwest Florida can feel more like hunting than fishing. We will slowly pole along the shoreline scanning for what could be the Snook of a lifetime. Some days there may only be a few opportunities to present our fly, so pinpoint casting to the target is paramount. On the flip side we can blindly cast ambush points along the mangroves and have some great numbers of small to medium snook!
I prefer to use 8wt and 9wt fly rods when we are chasing snook as they have enough power to wrestle snook from cover while still providing a delicate presentation. Flies for snook can range from little 1.5" shrimp to big mullet sized poppers and everything in between. I love fishing a white fly when possible as it creates a great visual for the angler but black flies also get a lot of love. Yellow can also be a great color in the backcountry and is easy to see.
